Introduction: What do Abraham and a lost Spanish treasure ship have to do with understanding the words of Jesus to the seven churches? In terms of preparing us for God’s Voice Like A Trumpet correspondence in Revelation Chapters 1-3 … everything!
Chapter One: Revelation Chapter One. The Apostle John receives a visit from his favorite friend, the Lord Jesus Christ! Although suffering for the faith in exile on Patmos, God has a plan for his Apostle in the last years of his life. John will be liberated from bondage and sent back to Asia to deliver individual letters to seven churches from his awesome and glorified Lord!
Chapter Two: Ephesus. A city whose melting pot of people and colossal mercantile success was as big as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world that resided within it. This massive marketplace saw the spread of the Gospel years earlier and the church here was still thriving. However, there was something forgotten and endangering these Ephesian saints if they did not change course.
Chapter Three: Smyrna. A sweet smelling community to the Lord, indicative of this city’s most recognizable aroma. These Smyrna faithful were bearing up under intense persecution for the name of Christ. When it comes to life and death matters, this church in the crown of Asia teaches us today how to obtain an everlasting lifetime headpiece from Jesus.
Chapter Four: Pergamum. What was it like for Christians living in the primary estate of Satan? Very challenging! This church was a mix of heroes and harlots that needed to repent in the ways Jesus was instructing them. A deeper look at the letter to this church provides a bit of an end-time blueprint of great significance.
Chapter Five: Thyatira. In hindsight, Alice Cooper hit the bullseye for these believers amongst their dominant city of trade and craft associations. These saints had many worthy attributes and praise from Jesus for their actions. The only problem was a lawless lady of the night leading church members astray, and the failure to repent of such sin would be catastrophic.
Chapter Six: Sardis. The poster church for needing a wake up call from God. These listless and aloof people were followers of Christ in name only. A congregation esteemed far and wide in the world but according to Jesus, deader than a door nail! The alarm bells were ringing for repentance and it was time for Sardis to wash its robes.
Chapter Seven: Philadelphia. It doesn’t get any better than this. Although for the Philadelphian faithful, the cost of suffering for Jesus couldn’t get much worse. No mega-church monstrosity of compromise here in the ancient origins of brotherly love. This small band of Godly devotees exuded the life of Christ. The numerous rewards offered here are available to us today by following Jesus as this church did.
Chapter Eight: Laodicea. We conclude the letters of Jesus to the churches with the legend. Legends in their own minds pursuing luxury and lascivious living for themselves! These false followers were not to be thrown aside, they were going to be tossed out of the tongue of Jesus without repentance! But wait… what is the Lord offering these believers if they repent? Buckle up and take a glorious seat while listening to this amazing mercy message!
